In Manila we were watching Penthouse Live, Miami Vice, Risky Business and Bagets. But most of all we were
watching MTV. MTV’s momentum was fueled by the extraordinary imaginativeness of the music of the time. It
was the pinnacle of the New Wave trend in music - one hit wonders with silly lyrics, catchy tunes and the magic
stuff memories are made of.
Hearing these songs today conjures up images we saw on screen, the times we had. We were young, we had fun, we didn’t have much to worry about. We hadn’t yet thought about the horrendous traffic jams, the odd-even scheme or the hard times that were to come.
We thought about cars, our friends, our nights out. If this generation could lay claim to halcyon days, they would be the days of the 1980’s. There may never be another decade like the ‘80’s. In our lives, or in music as we know it. Simply put, it had a good beat and you could dance to it.
